Building Daytona

Wicked Racer; I am assuming that you are building the Daytona tri-oval and not the road course. Personally I do not think you will have any problems-Riverside has a banked turn in the backfield, and the track was flexed using the metal and plastic wedges from an Aurora Banked Turn kit. Thankfully I had spare wedges, as these proved to be fragile! It has proven to be a highlight of the layout. I am in the planning phases of building a scale Indianapolis Motor Speedway, using Aurora O-Gauge track in the corners. These will be banked at nine degrees, just like the 1:1 course. Since this is a vintage effort, it will be on a 48" wide sheet of AC plywood with a lathing strip border, just like Riverside. The wedges that form the banking will be exposed and painted white, since the original color scheme at Indy was green and white. The layout board will be painted green. The wedges will be cut from 3/4" thick pine board and screwed down and glued onto the plywood sheet. The track pieces in turn will be screwed down to the wedges so they flex at nine degrees. Not much more complicated than that! God Bless! Tony mgbbrown

Road Course Then!

Wicked Racer; You did not specify which course, as many people enjoy racing NASCAR slots and build this layout as a tri-oval. The shadowed routes are often used by the SCCA and other organizations to configure a shorter route for various venues, and the darkened course is the endurance circuit. Basically the same applies-add the infield road course and the chicane in the backfield and bank the oval turns as on the original layout. Not too different from Riverside and certainly "a good try" or what ever you mean by that. It should be an interesting layout for sure and one you will enjoy. Good luck with it and keep us posted! Flex Track

I've never seen any in person, but I see the AFX Flex Track on ebay all the time. Maybe someone knows more about it.

Aurora AFX Flex Track

Serge; Here is a good photograph of a piece of Aurora 36" flex track. It is VERY bumpy due to the inter-meshing sections similar to a Speidel Twist-o-flex watchband from waaay-back. My guess is that this will create an irregular surface instead of a smooth one in actual use. Personally I have never seen one in the flesh or used one, but Wicked Racer said that it could stop a G-Plus in it's track so to speak! Interesting concept though. Aside from breaking the individual Aurora track banking wedges when setting up the backfield banked Turn 9 on Riverside, I did also break several curves too in the process. It can be done as I discussed, but one needs to be careful. Besides, an original lock-and joiner Tub Track circuit has an extreme banked turn. God Bless! Tony mgbbrown

Banking

Back when I built Canyonlands a few years ago, I used two sets of AFX banking to make 4 lanes. I think they were called Monza and Daytona; Monza being the inside set. Only my bone stock t-jets could not make it around. By that I mean my circa 1962 cars 100% original including tires and tarnish..
