Life is a Highway
I haven't been around much lately, but I have been busy! These are two of my latest customs, Mack and the King's hauler from Disney/Pixar's CARS. I made the trucks themselves about a year ago, using CARS Mini-Adventure plastic toys and combining them with AFX and XT truck chassis, and had pix in my gallery here before the big (server) crash of 2011. The trailers are new.
The trailers are based on AW Racing Rigs, but I ended up having to modify them just a bit. Because of the large cartoon stacks on the trucks, I had to move the trailers back in order to enable the trucks to turn (which can be handy from time to time). In order to make the trailers look "right," I had to extend the lower portion forward by about a quarter of an inch. The decals are custom made by me, my first attempt at creatingmy own decals. The artwork for the King hauler was found on a CARS diecast collector website and sized for the Mattel 155 deicast hauler trailer, which had to be resized to fir the AW trailer. To make the Mack decals, I scanned the side of a Mattel diecast and edited and resized it to fit. They were printed on MicroMark white decal film using an inkjet printer, and sprayed with Krylon clear-coat that MicroMark sells with the decal paper. If I had to do it all over again, I might print the graphics out on labels as paper stickers.
To make the King trailer, I stripped the AW trailer and repainted it -- a chore in and of itself! I don't know what kind of paint AW uses on these, but it was just about impervious to every paint stripping method known to styrene modelers. I ended up soaking it in a vat of Simple Green in my ultrasonic cleaner for a couple of weeks, and eventually managed to scrape it all off with a teaspoonm, leaving minimal damage to the plastic underneath. Then it was a quick coat of Tamiya primer/surfacer, a couple of coats of Petty blue, the decals, and a coat of clear.
Rather than strip the second trailer to make Mack, I simply sanded off the graphics, primed, and painted with red paint, then added the decals and clear coat.
For both trucks, I had to drill a new hole behind the cast-in 5th wheel to get the trailer to clear the big cartoon-y stacks. Mack's trailer was still hitting, so I carefully removed the pin from the trailer chassis and repositioned it toward the front.
They run OK, but the extra length means that a 9" radius curve is about as tight as they can handle. They're sitting on AW XT Ultra G chassis right now, but I may experiment with a wieght pan on my one non-MT AFX chassis to see if that helps them stay upright better.
All in all, it was a fun and educational little project, but I can't say I'd be too eager to try and repeat it!

Great work, Stig!
Posted by JohnsIsland on Mon, 2012-01-09 01:25These look stupendous! You have made some trucks to be proud of, certainly. Glad you gave some tips for the trailers. Never would have thought the paint would be that tough to get off.
Did you notch the front fenders or cut the gastanks for Mack at all?
And for the King---Did you have to file/sand the upper, outer edge of the gastanks? (Had to for the Octane Gain cab, which is similar)
Never finished either one---Got real frustrated with the exhaust stacks situation (thought about slicing them in half length-wise and moving them up into the sleeper area more) and Octane just never seemed to ride right on the chassis. I need to dig them out and re-think things.
Thanks for proving it can be done, Stig. And done very well, buddy. That's worth a lot.

Haulers
Posted by Stig McQueen on Mon, 2012-01-09 10:48To tell you the truth, the trucks were both pretty much "bashed" together, so I'm not sure exactly what I had to modify in terms of the AFX/AW truck chassis. The King hauler fit fairly well over the chrome AFX "tanks;" I just trimmed away whatever was left sticking out. I kept the mods to the cab to a minimum, just clearancing anything underneath that kept it from fitting. Mack is just kinda glued on to the tank unit, with a bit of clearancing of both as needed. I'll see if I can post some "detail" pix.

Posted by Plymouth71 on Tue, 2012-01-10 15:53I just wish I could find these. I've never come across them in Canada. I also have some "Cars" for my boy, however I'm at work and will have to try to upload pics later. Thank you for sharing!

Ebay & Amazon
Posted by Stig McQueen on Tue, 2012-01-10 18:43I've found the CARS Mini Adventure sets on Ebay and Amazon; they were never very popular, so there should still be some hanging around out there.

Coolness, Dan.
Posted by JohnsIsland on Sat, 2012-01-14 03:05I really like the Filmore one. Looks really good.
Did you use a Tomy chassis for Luigi?.
I used a Tyco US-1 chassis on the Mater I have. Not sure if the body is the same as yours, though. It was a tight fit on the sides, for certain.

yeppers!
Posted by Plymouth71 on Sat, 2012-01-14 10:31Actually, I just mounted my resin AFX mounts under there(thanks Serge!). I found the tomy chassis sticks to the track better at high speeds. I just picked up a second Tomater Body so not sure how this is going to go. The original one sported a 4 gear chassis, but the front wheel is just slightly too short.

Lookin' Good!
Posted by Stig McQueen on Sat, 2012-01-14 22:16I've made my own King with the same plastic body, and I finally got my Ramone up and running, but I haven't tried to tackle Fillmore or Luigi yet. Nice work!
I've actually got a couple of sets of Hallmark CARS ornaments that seem about the right size for a Tjet chassis, but they're solid resin and I haven't tried to hollow them out yet.
