Mending a Split Screw Post With a Brass Insert

mgbbrown's picture

Early in my return to slot cars I discovered that my beloved tan childhood Thunderjet Hot Rod roadster had a stripped screw post. Tan styrene has a reputation for being extremely brittle, as age is not particularly kind when stressed. At that time Road Race Replicas was a lifeline of support in the hobby, and Phil Pignon suggested that the screw post could be replaced with one from a junker. My resources consisted of the seven surviving cars in my Pit Kit as a boy, and I could simply not donate one to the cause. Phil suggested that I take a look at the brass inserts found on Rick Terry's web site, http://rt-ho.com/ which offered a pretty much bombproof solution. Rick machined brass inserts for use with a fine threaded screw with a head like the original ones used by Aurora to secure the chassis to the body. The center of the split screw post was reamed with a 7/64th inch drill which I hand held and slowly removed material until it was deep enough to place the brass insert, which at this point press-fitted into the reamed-out screw post. Once in place, a small amount of JB Weld was wiped over the outer edges to fill any voids between the insert and inner post. If the screw post is split, the bottom of the split is enlarged with an X-Acto chisel-point blade just enough to prevent the split from migrating under pressure, and the split is filled with additional JB Weld and wiped flush to the outer screw post with a wet paper towel. Once set, the post repair is complete. The nice thing about this type of repair is that it provides a firm mount for vintage brass weight pans and is a neat and permanent solution. Rick no longer pictures these on his site, and if enough folks express an interest I am sure that they can be made available. I will be happy to drop him a line. God Bless! TonyCoolmgbbrown

I bet that would work on my 4 gear vans too.  thanks Tony

I needs  some of those!

Thanks Tony

What kind of numbers are you at on these.  Has he agreed to make them?

Dan; Rick will make runs of 200 pieces but we have only a fraction commited-maybe for almost a hundred. I have not heard anything else on them. Of course Rick Terry will not make any without money in hand so we are stuck as far as I am concerned. This is by far the BEST solution to a split screw post that will not hold a screw! Unfortunately I cannot front the money for him to make them, but I am willing to pay for my portion though. God Bless! TonyCoolmgbbrown

Rick emailed me today to say that it was as I suspected- discontinued. BUT- he would be willing to put it back into production if there was enough interest. I have asked him the pricing, how many inserts were in a package, shipping cost, and how many orders would it take for production to resume. I know I will buy another set for sure. These things work like a BIG DOG! If you want some post a reply and I will tally them all up and get back to him.  God Bless! TonyCoolmgbbrown

Guys; I received a rather prompt reply from Rick. The inserts will be a dollar and a quarter each ($1.25) which I am certainly willing to pay as the fix is absolutely the best I am aware of. I have committed to a dozen myself. Let me know your requirements and if there is enough interest he will make them available again. He did not quote shipping but that should not be a problem since it is a small item, even in quantity. God Bless! TonyCoolmgbbrown

Tony, put me in for a dozen.

All Right Kelly! That makes 24. I think he will go for anything over 100. I am willing to commit for a couple of dozen but it will be next month as fixing the house back takes priority. Hopefully more folks will step up to the plate. These things are worth every penny! God Bless! TonyCoolmgbbrown

Matt; That makes four dozen so far. I will let Rick know if that is enough for a run. Hopefully he will make them but I will publish what he says on the site. THANKS MAN! God Bless! TonyCoolmgbbrown

Matt; Since Rick is a machinist by trade he might if we put in some numbers. I am willing to go for twenty-four as well. I will wait to see what he is willing to do as far as the production run is concerned. These are CNC machined so I am sure that the work is not too intensive. This makes five dozen. If we get it up a few more dozen I think that he will make the run for sure and throw-in some freebies. I have three cars so far repaired in this way-one was a turquoise Dino Ferrari with a spiral fracture on the front post. The other two were easy repairs and are now bomb-proof. God Bless!
