Saving The Pit Kit

Ray had suprised me a couple of weeks ago by sending an Aurora Thunderjet Pit Kit that was basically decaled over the entire inner lid, but had four vintage Ed Roth model decals inside which were suprisingly intact. Saving the Pit Kit reminded me of the just how far reaching The Rat Fink actually was during my childhood- even in North Carolina.  The Pit Kit was a jewel in the rough and a microcosm of the counter culture hero Big Daddy Roth was during that time. Too bad we did not grow up in California where we would have been in the thick of the Hot Rod and car scene during the 1960's, but then maybe I would not be enjoying a lot of things I do now such as being able to save this Pit Kit in the first place. Perhaps that yellow gumball Rat Fink I had as a boy will show up some day. COOL MAN! GROOVY!  I was able to use a salvaged handle from another Pit Kit with a torn lid hinge, so in the end there was a nice piece of the slot car past to keep on keeping on. I have some vintage pin stripes that should set this off nicely. THANKS Ray! God Bless! TonyCoolmgbbrown

Well, I knew I was sending it to the right place...when I saw those stickers, despite the rest of the MESS going on inside the lid, the good ones needed saving.  Nice job!

I have some vintage IMPCO hot rod pin stripes from about the same time frame that should dress this up and tie it all in. I'll need to locate a vintage Hop-Up Kit or some other small screw driver for it and an NOS Aurora Track eraser. I have a vintage handkerchief that was my dad's (he'd turn over in his grave if he knew what I was doing with those snot rags of his) and a period oiler filled with Cox gear lube I nabbed from Ray a while back. This one needs to be full of Willys gassers and assorted Hot Rods I think but I am inclined not to go down that slippery slope until several other projects are completed, namely the lexan Can-Am Pit Kit and the Endurance car lexan Pit Kit. I still need to locate six more Hot Rods. I have also been toying around with an all 289 Cobra Pit Kit since that is my all-time favorite car except perhaps for my MGB of course or a really nice '32 Highboy totally retro rod with a Ford Flattie. God Bless! TonyCoolmgbbrown
