What makes a seller bad? I'm sure we all have our horror stories. For me, they run the gamut - the intentionally "clueless" who list something feigning not to know anything about it, those who will only post intentionally poor pictures, misleading and "abusive" descriptions (think overused exclamation points for example, the word mint used again and again) to those who are completely unprepared to ship, use very poor shipping materials, etc etc. I think we've all encountered at least one by now, right?
This week I will get my first ever Unpaid Item Strike. I will wear it as a badge of honor for refusing to pay the most abusive seller in the slot car category. Why? To get a point across. I made a mistake. How? I wasn't paying very strict attention, wife was yapping at me (if you are my wife and are reading this, what I mean by yapping is that we were having a discussion about something of great significance and it was very interesting to me, ok honey?) , and I copied an item number I was watching over to esnipe and loaded up a bid. Unfortunately, I was watching to see just how much this idiot thought his item was worth. I never intended to bid. But, bid I did and by all rights I should pay up. Except...I'm not going to. Here's why...
The item was listed as a MINT GTO Aurora Tjet. As you can already guess, it's a Johnny Lightning body mounted on a tjet chassis. Of course during the ill-fated copying, I didn't even NOTICE because it looks just like an Aurora GTO or it would have caught my attention a little better. I consider this deception through omission of fact. It's perfectly allowable, as is listing bunch of brand names something is compatible with aka keyword spamming. As is, apparently, displaying items in pictures that aren't part of the auction. The list goes on and on. But the bottom line is - this seller knows exactly what he is selling yet refuses to list it accordingly and instead tries to pass it off as Vintage Aurora. He also knows exactly what he is doing, and exactly why he is doing it - to take advantage of the unsuspecting.
So, I decided I'm keeping my forty bucks. I've had plenty of buyers who never paid me, and so far with no real repercussion. He's already asked me to pay up. and I've now told him for the 3rd time I have no intention of paying. I'm being honest. And he can't make me. EVERY listing by this seller follows a strict pattern of being ...for lack of a better way to describe ...as bad as a seller can get. All perfectly within the rules, but all just dripping...oozing with the stink of deception. It's my opinion, and I'm entitled to it. I've always paid in the past, even when I realized I was getting screwed. But, no more. Not this time. Not this jerk.
So, maybe like car of the day, we can feature good and bad sellers of the week. What do you think?
This YEAR's winner of bad seller goes to.... :
BOOSA14 (aka 3547nate)
Boo. Hiss. Rot in Hell you SOB.
BTW - I do not recommend not paying. I'm just letting you all know for the first time I am going to take this route. As hard as I have to work to be honest, fast, offer to take returns, cancel transactions when someone makes a mistake, wait to get paid, etc, etc, just this once I'm taking the lower road. I will likely get an unpaid item strike, and as long as I don't get another for 18 months, then no harm, no foul. It's very much as if I have to play by a different set of rules than him and I am tired of it.
What would you do?
Just like sellers can block buyers, I wish as a buyer I could block certain sellers. This is one of them. Unfortunately he's not alone, just the worst one in my opinion.
Tell us your bad seller story!
*********
Updates:
- Boosa did give me an Unpaid Item Strike
- In turn, I left negative feedback (knowing it would get removed)
- CAVEAT EMPTOR - MISLEADING ADS AND MISREPRESENTATION ARE THE STATUS QUO HERE
- In turn, he left negative feedback disguised as positive
- Asks questions after auction ends and the tries to bully seller with F/
- In turn, he used his 3547nate account to purchase from me, presumably for the sole purpose of being able to leave negative feedback. I was 10 seconds from blocking him but he got through.
As of 2 Dec - the negative feedback I left Boosa was removed. To this he gloated and left a followup comment on the feedback he left for me "NON PAYING BIDDER Neg F/B left by this buyer was removed by eBay for F/B Abuse!" What a whiner.
As of 3 Dec - the Unpaid Item Strike he gave me was removed by ebay - I think pointing out that he has received 17 negatives in the past 12 months might have helped. Still waiting on his feedback to be expunged (which should be, as leaving a negative disguised as a positive is a violation). Also still waiting for them to cancel the Nate transactions. I tried to but to no avail. If it were an auction I could cancel the bids, but as a store owner I am a stting duck.

Submitted by kiwiAFX on Mon, 12/01/2008 - 00:58.I too got sucked in by the boosa bull shitter! back when i was new to ebay i bidded on a plasticville walkway over bridge for my layout, it was listed that it was "mint" , "very hard to come by" , "not many around" ,"orignial" so i thought wow thats what im after and jumped in and bidded and bidded and paid a silly price for it and crazy postage too, not knowing at the time that it wasnt rare at all and found another 2 for 9.99 each at another ebay store, it was just a modern repo of the original i learnt then to shop around and explore every avenue before trusting what someone elses opinion is on a certain item, some traders use many words to fool others into believing
Ouch
Submitted by Admin on Mon, 12/01/2008 - 09:02.I sure hope you didn't pay too much. I do have a couple of the vintage crossings, and then a bunch of the new kits to sell. Phred helped me recreate the start-finish banner for the new kits so I will also be including those as well as building them up. Pretty sure Boosa just resells the unbuilt $10 kit for $25. He won't get away with this much longer as mine will go for significantly less, include the banner, and be built. What would be a fair price for that?

What Constitutes a Bad Seller?
Submitted by Aussie Ho on Mon, 12/01/2008 - 06:54.I recall boosa14 not willing to send to 'Oz some time ago. After reading this article, I did a quick whip around ebay and found he now does send at unbelievable prices. Ouch !!
To continue the debate which is raging, I'm not at all happy with the great variation of postage rates from U.S ebay sellers and have learned I can get most small items (1 to about 5 cars) for a cost of between $8-12USD which is more than reasonable postage... but that only seems to be from reasonable sellers. Is it really necessary to charge $31.50USD to send a Ferrari body to Australia tubtrack? Me highly thinks not. I mean, it weighs bugger all.
However, I have found U.S sellers generally more honest than Aussie sellers with regards to postage. I have had the most heated email exchanges arguing that small, light-weight items Australia wide less than 250gms costs EXACTLY $5.85AUD to post including the cost of a small box (like you can't recycle one anyway huh?!?1!). Packs 250-500gms are $7.05 and it does NOT depend on distance up to 500gms. Weights above this go by calculation but it isn't rocket science and in fact you can do the whole pricing on line. I know this because I have sold a lot of stuff and know the Australia Post guide inside out, back to front and it does NOT confuse me in the slightest.
Ignorance on the part of money hungry and unethical sellers shows exactly what ilk they are.. down-right greedy, dishonest and generally uneducated people who must think buyers are as stupid as they are.
Ebay must shoulder some blame here because they do NOT police variables such as handling fees. A VERY short walk down to the Post Office for me does not constitute adding a fee on top of a postage cost as far as I am concerned. I charge the actual cost to the buyer, and I recycle 100% of my packaging. Why can't ebay police this?
I do accept a little cream on top as a buyer as I genuinely believe some sellers do need to drive to a post office and there are minor contingent costs involved.. but to add 50-100% on top is just highway robbery.
Another thing which absolutely kills me is the dishonest habit of bumping up prices on auctions. I believe the term is "shill bidding". I have only recently successfully had a seller de-registered for rigging his own auction after a blatant attempt to "fish" out my highest bid. But I am certain I have been the victim of this on other occasions. On one occasion I took up a 2nd chance offer because the seller apparently had another identical item. Identical I'll say !! I received the very SAME used item he had listed, with matching scratch marks on the body, cracked front tyre and missing pick-up shoe and ripped AFX Express sticker on the trailer..!! Absolutely amazing that there were 2 of the very same truck/chassis/trailer on this planet. I was stunned but what could I do about it? I recall that particular auction going to and fro between me and another bidder and I originally lost it.. But I think I lost in more ways than 1 in the end.
Going back to the de-registered seller, here is how it transpired.
On a rare Lexan AFX body item with starting price of $0.99, I had put a single bid of about $22AUD and left it to see how it went for the 10 days it was listed. Maybe 2 hours from the end of the auction and with only 1 bid, my chances were looking pretty good at getting it for $0.99 but as is with a lot of Aussie auctions, I figured last minute bidding was more than likely so I went to bed. The next day I checked my email and I had the dreaded "You've been outbid" notice which was totally fine and nothing to get messed up over. But the next email told a very different story. "You've won item". And the alarm bells started ringing. When I checked the auction, "bidder 2", the only other bidder, had made bids and continued to "fish" around until he had overtaken me on the bidders list... only to retract that particular high bid, thereby sitting just under me and pushing the price up to $22. Not a lot you may ask, but a totally fishy and stinky auction if you ask me and my beautiful and intelligent wife. Ebay was notified and within a few days the seller AND bidder 2 were de-registered. 1 in the same person perhaps??. Definitely.
Tony, I totally agree with your statement which I translated into meaning that how you are seen to be as a seller, is pretty much how you really are. ie Grubby items = grubby surroundings. Dishonest and ill-communicated/portrayed = deceitfull and unscrupulous by nature.
I rate a seller by their honesty, item accuracy, ability to answer questions promptly/acurately and of course their transparency with postage rates. For these reasons I have rated the following sellers. The best sellers in Australia: cutzincool, aussiehobbies, redracerhobbies and of course me ang-au67.
The best sellers in U.S: rainman585s, maggie630_1, bob-slots, dge34us, z28camaroguy, budshocarsinc.
Wow.. that was a mammoth effort. I have worn out finger prints for typing!!

IN REGARDS TO AUSTRALIA
Submitted by OhioSlotCars on Tue, 12/02/2008 - 22:57.AUSTRALIA is the ONLY country I won't sell to, Sure, you can send a "small item" there for $5.00-$6.00 but it takes about 45 days,or even longer, to get there at THAT price, OTHERWISE, you have the AIRMAIL option, of $20.00-$30.00 to get there in a week or so. I had the unfortunate circumstance of selling to a lady there. I got a NEGATIVE feedback ,BEFORE she received it,even though I sent her the copy of the shipping receipt, and told her it was on the way. That was all I could do, It was only a few dollar item, and she didn't want insurance, or the EXTRA cost of getting it sooner. SO I WON'T SHIP TO AUSTRALIA, and Please don't ask again, Is what I tell someone who asks for a shipping quote. I don't need the headaches. This is the ONLY COUNTRY I have shipping problems with, in regards to time and price. This is my 1st post ....Thanks for listening. Dennis
IN REGARDS TO AUSTRALIA
Submitted by Aussie Ho on Wed, 12/03/2008 - 03:21.Welcome Dennis. Yeah, I DO hear you regarding impatient buyers. I get complaints myself when I sell to Western Australia (furthest area from me on the East Coast) and buyers jump up and down after 3 short days. I am more sympathetic than that and deal very comfortably and successfully with foreign sellers and am a regular returning customer to a lot of them, predominantly from the U.S. I cannot say I have had many dramas with the sellers I deal with and I generally get my items within 2 weeks, which is more than reasonable I feel. Equally, I don't have any dramas selling to foreign buyers and have done so repeatedly over the years also.
My real concern is when I ask a foreign seller politely about shipping and I get abused. What is the point in that? I mean, we are all civilized and educated aren't we? A simple and polite "no" is enough. I make it a rule that I NEVER ask that seller again so as not to annoy them. I have to respect their decision and the only sellers I do ask are the one's who don't stipulate on their listings where they are willing to send. On most of these occasions, they are more than willing to send hear anyway. If it's plainy obvious a seller won't send overseas eg "U.S bidders only" then buyers should respect that.. and I do..!!!! I'm saddened that an isolated incident has left a bitter taste in your mouth for Aussie buyers, but I hope after dealing with Ray, Bud's, Bob's, Dan Walsh etc repeatedly that my reputation speaks for itself as a diligent and patient buyer with 100% f/b. I spend good money on slot car gear and totally understand the tyranny of distance. However, I must respect your decision and I'm sorry we won't be doing business.
In Regards to Overseas and Other Places on the Globe
Submitted by mgbbrown on Wed, 12/03/2008 - 10:05.THANKS Dennis and Angel! I know your guys are good folks and I certainly respect your decisions. In the past, primarily before the more recent advent of ebay, I shipped with wild abandon to England various RARE AS ROCKINGHORSE MANURE as the Brits say historic rally and MGB bits. NOT ONCE was there ever a problem but I did on occassion have to wait a few days for Her Magisty's Post to deliver the item, but this was more often a Customs delay, something that has been overlooked in the discussions here. Often the same problem is incountered when shipping to Canada, and unfortunately the problem more often than not lies in the US side of Customs and not the other side. I had a rather prolonged delay on my end when shipping a set of New Old Stock Koni shocks to a gentleman in Quebec. We became great friends despite the delay. Rest asured-there are bad cookies on both sides of the pond and I would ship to Angel or Gary or Jase because I know them now like a brother and trust them for their personal integrity. Unfortunately CHARACTER is often lost these days. God Bles! Tony

It Is OK Dennis
Submitted by mgbbrown on Fri, 12/05/2008 - 06:43.Dennis; We are all GOOD folks here and we are not in the least upset with decisions like this on your part as a personal attack. In fact, our Australian members acknowledge there is a problem and for instance show hesitation or have set limits in shipping o western Australia as an example. Personally as a seller I have had difficulties shipping myself to Canada, but this was a Customs hold-up and not a breach of personal responsibility. This was on my end-so believe me I was sweating it out! I always provide my customers with insurance and a tracking number so they also can trace a package in transit, but it too is a testimony to your prompt response to ship. As a nurse who works which alcohol and drug addiction, we daily place limitations on our individuals not because of something they personally have done, but because of past infractions or in the desire to keep them safe during a stay. As an aside, I have personally known Dennis for quite some time, have purchased from him on numerous occassions, and have always found him to be a refuge in a storm. I think that perhaps we can all rest, but unfortunately rest assured that as long as there are people placing themselves in front of others, there will always be problems like we have all discussed with abandon. God Bless! Tony

If something should come up Thunderjet wise or some vintage MGB rally bit or a vintage Atlas track building for Riverside (Ray is also my main source and a FANTASTIC one I might add) please let me know. I live in the country but not the Outback. It might as well be, as all we have out this way are deer hunters, pit bull dogs, and assorted redneck ruffins-so this is no slot car Mecca. It isn't even Kansas Dorothy. It still is very pretty though, this section of the northern North Carolina Piedmont. Submitted by Admin on Mon, 12/01/2008 - 19:52.Well, in order to ever make Angel's list, you need to ship overseas to begin with. Not really as daunting as some sellers try to make it out to be, but if you're not armed and ready then yeah, it can be a pain in the butt. Of course these are the same folks usually ill prepared to ship anything anywhere anyways. And yeah, selling slot car stuff will help make his list too!

Fear Not
Submitted by Aussie Ho on Wed, 12/03/2008 - 15:39.Ray. I don't want to appear the ogre here and give the impression I detest any seller who won't send to Australia. On the contrary, I respect the seller's rite to send items wherever they wish. But I'd much prefer they be polite about it when asked, and not so inconsiderate and abusive about the request. What I DO detest is rudeness at all levels of society. I believe being polite but at the same time sincere is utmost and some human beings appear to have lost that sensitivity about them, therefore destroying their character in the process. We are civilized and educated and can all get our point across without being savages.
Hear, Hear
Submitted by Admin on Wed, 12/03/2008 - 15:58.Yep, I agree Angel! If a seller doesn't want to ship somewhere, it is probably out of fear of being taken advantage of at some point in the transaction. Once that happens, it only takes one or two bad apples to spoil the whole country for the seller. For me, the few problem buyers I've had were in Brazil and Italy. However, since I was able to resolve them all, I then fixed it by blocking the specific problem buyers and continue to ship world-wide. Approx 40% of my sales are international, I'm not about to cut someone off just because they live in a certain place. I guess if and when I ever come out on the losing end I will feel differently about it. Until then, I'll keep shipping everywhere.

Submitted by robin3897 (not verified) on Sun, 03/08/2009 - 11:46.They are bad sellers. they lie and sell crap. MY ITEM! They said that it was NOS. Ya right, was used, missing parts and junk.
Then they tried to fight paypal, and lost. Said that I switched the item. Sent the crap item back to them in the same conditon and paper wrapping they sent it to me in(was supposed to have been well packaged, bull****, if you consider a brown paperbag adequate shipping material) and won Paypal fight.
They said that I lost. huh? They even posted it as a reply to my negative feedback which is against policies. Also, this gentleman who has this page pointed out to me on 3/7/09 while I was talking to him that the feedback above mine was positive feedback from a buyer but Boosa14 used the reply for followup feedback to leave negative feedback about me which is against the rules again. So I listened to this gentleman that has this page and he walked me through on how to report Boosa14 for a violation of feedback profiling. They also I had found out do shill bidding (have two accounts throught Ebay, one private, one public to raise bidding so they can make more money and they got caught, but account is still active). I got my money so who lost the fight. Not me, but in their feedback states that they won -BS. They are bad people and should not be selling on ebay. They lie and put false ads on listings. You don't get what is shown. They are the fools. Plus shipping prices are out of this world. Just sell junk. Post follow up feedback to my item through other buyers feedback. Don't think so. Reported that fast. We need to get them off ebay. They make buying not fun. Overcharge for shipping, $25.00 to ship a 1lb 4 oz item via Parcel Post which cost me to ship back to them $8.10 via Prioity Mail, insured and delivery confirmation. So who's gouging the customer here? BEWARE!!! The case was appealed by them and they lost. Now, I just noticed as of 3/7/09 that they are appealing the appeal which I thought through Paypal's forum that you could not reopen a final decision case. Hum? Will post more after 11 a.m. CST. Going to call Paypal to find out what is going on with this idiot. Thanks to this gentleman that has this awesome site and to other Ebayers that have contacted me via phone about Boosa14. Thank you, will keep you updated and we will win and get these fools, liers and cheats off of Ebay. My suggestion to anybody is from a gentleman who called me the other night about Boosa14 "Do not buy or be very careful when buying from people with negative feedback. Do you own investagations. Contact as many as possible negative or neutral feedback clients to hear their story. To the gentleman who wrote this page on bad sellers I think he says it best that buyers should be able to block certain sellers just like sellers can block certain buyers. Thanks again. robin3897

Submitted by Aussie Ho on Sun, 03/08/2009 - 16:35.Hey there Robin.
What you say is so common of poor sellers that it is very infuriating. I stick to only a handful of Aussie, U.K and U.S sellers now. These sellers I trust and I know are of impeccable character.
Sorting out the good sellers from the bad may be an expensive exercise, but in the end you will certainly find out who deserves your hard earned cash. I too have had a few very ordinary experiences with sellers but ebay does very little to boot them out.
Ebay is much like a flea market where anybody can join in and sell and buy. There is very little screening done to ensure buyers' protection other than making claims through paypal which takes far too long. Be careful with your money and try to build up a good rapport with sellers who deserve it.
It's site forums like this which alert enthusiasts to potential rip-off sellers and this is the greatest tool against them. Sending out a strong message to deter unsuspecting buyers is a lot like word of mouth and that message can be extremely effective. I'm not aware if this occurs on other sites but I'm sure when communities of people get together on line like here, the general feeling can indeed influence other people's buying decisions.
I know I will NEVER go anywhere near boosa14.
Angel.
The Continued Boosting By BOOSA
Submitted by mgbbrown on Sun, 03/08/2009 - 20:30.I have dedicated a large portion of my energies to helping those less fortunate who have been waylaid by the curse of drug and alcohol dependence. For those who come for our help on their own steam there is HOPE because the have made a DECISION to set their life on a new course outside of addiction. This is something that takes courage and strength. Honesity is a DECISION as is dishonesty, and the choice to conduct dealings in such a manner is both disguisting as it is permeating. I bet that if we took a video of his life, we would find that in virtually ALL of his relationships from family life to job to ebay are infiltrated with a mindset of greed and lack of character. The trouble is: HE JUST DOES NOT HAVE A CLUE. If he can get away with something he will, whether it is lying, cheating on his taxes, or outright breaking the law. For BOOSA, his reputation will ALWAYS be what it is-and his ebay dishonesty will my friend haunt him in the end.
